Everyone wants a great video but many people don’t fully understand what all is involved in the process. It takes some foresight, planning and time to produce a great video. Here are 3 parts that every video needs to have, no matter what type of video it is.

1. Pre-Production: This is a critical phase in the video process, but many times people fail to put much time in it. This phase is the planning phase and it may take 10%-25% of the total project time. Think through these items:

  • What’s the purpose of the video?
  • What is the audience of the video?
  • Do we need to interview anyone? Make sure to line them up for the day/time that you have scheduled. What questions should you ask the persons you interview?
  • You need to write an outline, which may then be developed into a script and shotlist. You may need to consult a copywriter to draft a script for you.
  • How long will the video be?
  • What “b-roll” do we need? (b-roll is all the action footage and may or may not need audio with it)
  • Do we need a voiceover artist to record our script?

2. Production: This phase is where you get to shoot video (and have fun). This may involve a few hours or several days to shoot all the video necessary for the video. While this process may only be 10%-25% of the total project time it involves a lot of equipment and total time for everyone involved.  Here are some aspects to think about in the Production process.

  • Get video interviews
  • Shoot b-roll that will support the visual needs for the video
  • Gather images that will go into the video
  • Getting audio along with the video. Do you need to capture high quality video of machinery, animals, etc?

3. Production: This is the editing phase where you piece together all the video footage. The Production phase takes the longest and may account for 40%-70% of the total project time.

  • Images to put into the video
  • Audio from machinery, animals, interview, etc
  • Music – this may be a soundtrack to play during the video
  • Graphics
  • Review phase where you should it off for suggestions for improvement
  • Export for delivery
